Massey Harris 21 Prep work

Today, I started preparing my Massey Harris 21 for this wheat harvest. I mounted the machined block on the engine stand. Looked over engine parts and will begin the build in the next few months. Removed the center canvas from the machine for inspection. It appears to be in pretty good condition. I was concerned the bottom of the canvas would not be useable. I also added a picture on the grain truck patiently waiting for harvest. It"s a restored 1950 Chevy 4400 grain truck. Welcome comments. Masseypride

Keep the pics coming on that project! It would be interesting to have a book on it when your done. That sure is one good looking truck also.

Thanks for the pics, I'm getting sick of the cold. Ready to hit the field again. That is one sweet looking truck. Nice work.

What a great old truck. We had one just like it but you had to hold it in third. That's not easy to do without power steering. I sure do wish I had it back now. I hate to think of how many good vehicles that our local junk man bought right off our place.

That Chrysler is going to really hum. I love the sound of them when they are in a thick patch. They can really bark. We had one on our super 92 - a 265 or something close to that. I could have listened to it all day.

It always seemed to me that Massey was ahead of its time in header width. Maybe Deere and others had similar sizes but I remember looking at other combines of comparable age and thinking they had less of a header. I still have never seen a sample as clean as our 92 would produce every day. The new combines don't hold a candle.

Neat old combine and truck. What are those fingers protruding from the front bumper on the truck? Never seen anything like those before!

I added a couple of pictures of the Grain truck. These were taken at after harvest days in Denmark, Kansas this late July.

Looks to be a nice job going on there! I really like that truck. When the electric header lift was mentioned it made be think of a former co-worker who salvaged that motor assembly from an old combine to use as a way of moving his HUGE toolbox/bench around. Up/down=forward/reverse!

Nice project going on!
You will have your 21 and your Super92 running in the same field? That something I would like to see!

Shawn,

Wish you much success with that project. Wow for a nice truck. Dad owned a 1949 similar to that but not nicely restored.

At Farmamerica (I sent you pictures of our 21A awhile back) we have that combine in the heated shop but haven"t started any work on it.

Are you doing all this work by yourself or do you "ship" some to specialty shops??

Ron

Ron,

The engine is a sore subject for me. I paid a guy good money to rebuild the engine. I was expecting an assembled engine. The engine returned in pieces with almost double the bill. So, I will be assembling the motor myself. I guess we all live and learn.

On the Canvas, I have a few broken wooden slats and the belt buckle connector pieces I will take to a local tarp shop for repair. I have spoken with tarp shop owner about the canvas and he has prior experience repairing them. I will need to dig them out and get them in the shop before they get busy.

All of the rest of the work will be completed by me. It will probably take twice as long but I will know its done right when I'm finished. I work on weekend and evenings whenever I can find the time. Good Luck with your restoration.

fdt860,

I don't know if I will have the time to work on the Super 92 prior to harvest. I do have a MH 92 that is field ready. This will be 70th anniversary on my grandpa participating in the famous Massey-Harris Brigade in 1944. I want to make sure this 21 is ready to go. I wanted to get the 21 and my current Massey Ferguson combine in the same field together for pictures and video. I hope to make a few newspaper articles with my effort. I current have the motor out on newer combine to freshen up the motor. I'm hoping I have not bitten off more than I can chew. I dream of the day when all of my Massey Harris combines will be harvesting on my home place. I might have to recruit Yesterday Forum Posters for operators. I would supply a glorious meal along with alcoholic beverages for all operators and their families.

If you ever get a Massey Harvest day together I'm in!

I would absolutely love to hear/see your super 92 run. If you need help with those combines you just let us know! I grew up near Buhler (folks are still there) but my farm is near Ottawa/Baldwin City. A couple hours is never too far to drive to see a 92 in action!

I'd offer to help you work on those straw walkers, but that was my specialty when I was about 10 years old. I'm older and more crippled now. I can't imagine laying on them on that little chenille bath mat now!

notjustair,

Thank you for the offer to help me work on the combines. I think I have a nephew who is still small enough to climb up in on the walkers. It was my job when I was young to clean the grain out of the front of the grain pans every day. I would close the chaffer and slide up with a modified hoe to reach up under the concave to make sure nothing was left up there. Funny what you remember.

Hello Shawn. My grandpa worked for the Massey dealer in Ellsworth. He used to deliver and set up combines. He also ran a 21A, 27, and 92. I'd love to come out during harvest and see the 21 running!
