JD 9500 with 4WD

Was told by someone that the 4wd should always be engaged when in the field to relieve pressure off the front drive. Just bought a 9500 with 4wd.

Haven't heard that one.

Here's something you need to know for sure. JD says that you can engage the assist on the go. Not so. Even if you throttle it down and engage it there's a pretty good chance that it will blow the O-ring seal out of the endplate. Even if you get out and check it you may have it blow after you start moving. It is just so much pressure for that little seal.

Your first sign of trouble will be that the reel stops moving. By then it is too late. It won't be but about 5 seconds later that you have lost all 25 gallons in the field and she won't even move. You barely have time to register that you might have a problem and you have oiled the last 300 feet of wheat stubble.

Don't ask how I know. About five times over.

It is a wonderful machine. However, if you foresee using the assist keep an end plate and seal on hand. It always goes after dark on Saturday night.

It does not have anything to do with the pressure. You have three hydraulic motors pushing rather than one (the transmission motor, and each rear wheel motor over just the transmission motor)

Notjustair is correct in that you should be setting still when you engage the 4wd. I run mine all of the time in my hills. It just gets around better. Plus I have noticed that I can be running right next to where a 2wd machine is running. I will not be leaving any tracks at all and the 2wd will have tracks. The rear helping push does more than you think.

I have seen studies that show that a 4wd machine, with the same tires as a 2wd machine, will cause less compaction. I tend to think this is correct.

Some guys complain that the machine goes slower with the 4wd engaged. That is true but I never have had an issue with not being able to shift up to the next gear an go as fast as I want.
