driverless tractor circles

another long used technique was to tether steer a tractor pullin a disc tiller ,the tractor was left runnin in gear tillin in a circle and each lap it would move out by way of a wire fastened to the front wheel ,, I know very little about this other than ,I know this idea is over 70 yrs old ,and was used out in the plains , and seemed to be fool proof ,tillin as much as a full 640 acre section in a circle ,, naturally , no obstacles could be in the field .. hopefully .some of you fellas out there mite want to share some of their stories ...

On a much smaller scale I have heard of guys doing that when mowing. Each round the driverless machine would come in closer due to the winding around the central pole. You would need to size the pole just right to make it efficient.

The thought of doing that on a section of ground gives me the willies. I wouldn't do it for the same reason I won't get a remote car starter - who is monitoring the oil pressure guage?

I set up a tractor to do this, It worked great except I was so nervous, I was checking on it all the time might as well have been on the seat

daddy use to tell about a man he was in service with telling him about them doing that,we use to ask what if it jumped out of the furrow,he said that they used a tail wheel that would shut it off if it left furrow, don't know for sure if the story was legit,he also made the remark about them cutting grain around home with a scythe cradle during the 20's into the 30's and using threshing machines,he said they were already using combines in the wheat country

The remote car starters will not work if there is any engine codes. My wifes car just had a sensor throw a code and her remote start would not work until it was cleared/corrected.

My dad said that they would break ground in the winter with a 10-20 McCormick-Deering tractor. They would have a rope on the tractor to tie the steering wheel so that it would have the front wheels turned enough to follow the plow furrow. He would then get off the tractor and walk to the center of the field and stand by a fire he had built, waiting for the tractor to catch up. They broke 300 acres of ground one January and February. He pulled 3-12's in frozen ground with the 10-20 in first gear. He said the steel wheels would really grip frozen ground.
