Not quite finished with 2013 yet

Is anyone else still trying to finish up harvesting the 2013 crop? I had an awesome year in 2013 with my harvesting but it seems like I may never get finished. We narrowed it down to 80 acres of sorghum and the past three weeks rain has held me up big time.I kinda feel like the lone wolf still trying to run when everyone else has put thier combine away for the year.I have cut sorghum the last week of December before but it is looking like a mid Janurary finish may be a new record for me.

Neighbor who does a lot of custom work had a few acres of corn yet to do. Not a good thing here in NY. It froze up good here a couple days ago. I expected to see him working at it New Years Eve, but he wasn't. Don't know if he got after it yesterday. Now with this storm, it might be all over.

We got done in November... but went to a hockey game 2 weeks ago (our boy plays in the 10 year old age group) and got talking to a farmer from about 40 miles away who still has a bunch of canola still to do... they'll do it before seeding... it's a tad cold to start a combine here now, mind if i could start my 106 i don't think i'd have an issue with overheating like i do in August!

Good luck Haley, i hope you get her wrapped up soon! Happy New Year!

Your not alone! I finished my little 10 acre corn patch on dec 25. It got blowed over, not flat but enough that the combine didnt like it. We ended up picking 90% of it by hand. If it weren't for my mom and dad helping me i still wouldn't have it. Mom, and Dad picked about 4hr's a day, and I would relieve them when I got off work. What should have took ONE day took about a month. My beans went flawlessly. Cut 15 acres in 4 hrs. I was very happy with that, kinda restored my faith! This was the first time i raised any soy beans, and I figured it would be a steep learning curve, but it wasn't bad at all. Broke the cutter bar drive, welded that, had to adjust the sieve a little bit, and let her eat!

In 1972 some didnt finish beans until March of 1973....In 1974 some didnt finish bean and milo harvest until Feb of 1975..By then there wasnt much left..

Last Saturday I was in SE Kansas and saw several fields of double crop beans that hadnt been harvested yet..My neighbor finished up on 7800 acres about 3 weeks ago..

same here ,, cept they gonna take a tumor precancer button off my hand in couple hours ,,wanted to get all done 1st ,,. gonna be able to help brother , nephews and sons to git -r -done as weather and bin space gets avai lable ,,, may as well be handling worthless sand ,,.

Shame it ever got that big. 7800 acres is 10+ upper middle class family livings around here. Have a couple neighbors farming less than 500 acres with livestock making very good livings. I can't for the life of me understand these guys that want to farm the whole county. They get bigger and bigger wanting their sons to farm and then they get bigger and bigger equipment which means they need more and more acres to stay busy. Never ending cycle of greed. You know what they say, don't covet what your neighbor has... I don't want to farm my neighbors ground too, but I'll be real glad to stop along the fence row and chat with him. And I won't be skipping if he decides to rent me his ground because its just sad to me. I'd rather have another small farmer nearby than some empty ground... It'll be interesting to see what $4.00 corn does. If a guy pays $300 rent then his first 75 bushels go to the landowner. If you could average 180bu/ac then thats the equivalent of going 42%/58%. I won't shed a tear for them though.

There's a lot of corn standing around here, and no propane at the local dryer. I finished up one neighbor's corn on the 31st, have a few acres to do for another neighbor, and about 25 acres of my own to do. So far, I've just done what I need to use for grinding feed, as it hasn't dried down well, and propane is so high. But another 6"-8" of snow, and whatever is left will have to stay until spring. The deer are happy, though.

To bad everyone can't go back to living on 80 acres using a mule. All these danged new fangled machines using internal combustion engines is going to ruin the American way of life.

Maybe...but the propane tanks at the dryer are empty. I was told they can't get any, as what is available is only being sold for home heating.
