Prices of used combines

Friend of mine says the auction prices on used combines have dropped drastically probable due to steep drop in grain prices. He said 4420's were barely bringing 2K. I am thinking about trading my 6620 up to a 94/9500 combine. Any readers seen lower prices lately at auctions?

I have seen that the prices are dropping some but the ones that are real cheap are in pretty bad shape too. The cost of repairs is showing up on these old machines. When the combine is only worth maybe $5000 and the parts to put it back in good shape are $5000 them what do you do????

IF you can do the work and know the rest is in good shape then you may do it. If you can't do the work then your in trouble.

As for trading up from your JD 6620 to a JD 9400/9500. Make sure and get a later model of both. These 9000 series combines where a completely different design that the older 00/20 combines. They had some bugs that needed to be worked out of them.

One of the big ones in on the JD 9400. DO NOT buy one with the 359 motor in it. The 359 is great motor but they hung the auger unload drive out about 10 inches from the crankshaft dampener pulley. I have personally seen FIVE of them break the crankshafts right behind the dampener. It usually happened right around the 2000-2500 hour mark.

I would hold out and try to get into a 9410 or 9510. They had a lot of updates that are worth the extra money to me. Just the setting of the chaffer and concave are big ones. Then back to the 13 bar concave( Titan II days) and a digital readout on the concave settings.

Truthfully I think we will see lower prices on used equipment for the next 18-24 months. The swing in grain prices will effect the net incomes greatly. There is going to be major loses on many acres of grain in the next few years. HIGH inputs/rents will take time to adjust to the lower gross income.

Wish I had a truck to haul those 4420's in to here. They bring 8 to 10 grand for most. I got one for 8 and it needs a little help. With that said, yes the market is getting softer, Local Case dealer called me about 2 weeks ago with a good deal on a 1460, about 4 grand less than original offer. I had already bought the 4420.

I saw a really nice 4420 sell for about 30K last spring. Small machines are still in demand back East. Combines here used to be the 10 year old ones out of the Midwest. No huge numbers of good small machines out West to buy anymore. Narrow roads, and small fields mean big machines aren't practical.

I bought a 1993 9400 6 years ago and have had zero problems with it. It has the larger engine. The guys are probably right on going to the ten series for some of the improvements. Prices in my area have tapered off some but not drastic, I agree that in a few years we will see a reset on used equipment prices if grain prices stay down. Local jd dealer is feeling it already with new equipment.

I also bought a 4420 two years ago from my local JD dealer for $8,000 that had 2,800 hrs. It came from a local farmer who had owned it for 22 years and traded it for a 9410. I then paid the JD dealer another $3,000 to go over it. They changed all the fluids, rebuilt the water pump, and changed several belts etc. Then paid $2,000 for the 213 head. Small combines in nice shape are hard to find in my area. I use it for about 35 acres of wheat & oats. Al

It seems used equipment prices have been at some unsustainable levels, so some correction is due.

However, how much did equipment values change in 2009, the last time corn tanked? General economy was in a freefall, nobody had a job, the 5 day outlook was for 3 days.

Used equipment, however, if in good to top shape, held right in there for value. Better than a 401K. Junk was still junk, however.

Used equipment prices seem to be dictated more and more by what a new replacement costs, and by how many repairs are needed. If new costs stay at today' rediculous levels, not many buyers will be out there. If it is good and used, it will still be worth something to somebody.

here in s.il prices have really dropped at auctions about 30% of value there are too many used combines out there that are far from wore out and all the big farmers want a new machine every year

Glad I bought my when I did it's a 78 6600 with 404 had 3200 hrs bought it and 215 for 4200$ had to do alittle and I mean alittle maintenance but that combine will run with the neighbors 9670 and he said it done just as nice a job like was posted before I've had several offers for way more then I paid just for the machine with no heads

I was a little harsh below. Cousins was a 1994 model and basically a good machine. He bought in the fall of 1997. We found the 20' head and also heavy corn (6 row 30s) worked it pretty good. He always kind of regretted not having bought the longer 9500. He had a late model 6620 with 16' head and 4 row 38s previous to the 9400. It gleaned grain really well, 6620s became popular with local popcorn farmers.

Just went to an auction in Southern Wi and a nice 9500 sold for 29,000 with a recent 20,000 spent on repairs like new unload auger. No heads. Don't know if this high or not as I'm. Hay farmer!!!!!!
