IH 820 head

Bought one, darned good shape, and a 1460 to run it. So, I know the 1020 is the cream, but what exactly is it that some guys say it is a worthless head. It is a 20" flex. Will be ised for soybeans and small grains. Are there any updates a person can do to improve any problematic areas?

There used to be several shops that would put some of the IH 1020 updates on your IH 820 head. I have not seen any of them advertising lately.

The think the main complaint was the floating cutter bar system. The IH 820 just was not very durable and did not have the range of float the later IH 1020 had.

Also the cross auger is larger in diameter on the IH 1020 heads. So they do not wrap in tough crops conditions as much.

The late IH 1020 heads also have an oil bathed wobble box drive.

Then the IH 1020 had a much better end divider over the IH 820.

The IH 820 header will work in good crop conditions if it is in good repair. IF the header is worn out an the crop conditions are tough then the IH 820 can be a nightmare to run.

I owned 2 820 heads, and got a long OK with them.

Young's Ag Service can tell you anything you need to know about them.

Biggest problem is the end dividers are heavy and make it hard for the head to float in beans. (Young's have a light divider)

Also they don't cut as close as a 1020....again Young's modifies them to cut closer than any head out there (they shave).

If you have rocks....you DO NOT WANT one they have modified though.

I use an 820 head. Suggest updating to an aftermarket finger reel; roughly $1300. The row dividers are really bad, bulky and heavy. The Young version is great, but we just removed the front portion, then bought and attached the alternative wire dividers from CIH. Since you lose so much weight, the balance springs need to be set real light. I like the wires because they don't protrude so far in front of the head, you save a lot of beans when forced to combine on a radius. I also upgraded to an SCH cutter bar and it works great. If your cutter is good, probably would save the money. Make sure the "retainers" which support the top transverse tube which moves with the floating cutterbar are well lubed. I also up-graded to an afternarket electrical control rather than use the original cable system. It reacts a little faster but isn't cheap; around $1500.
