Calmer stalk rolls

I need to put new stalk rolls on my 444 cornhead before next year. Does anyone have Calmer BT Chopper stalk rolls on a cornhead and how much difference is there in the job they do compared to regular rolls? I haven"t checked price yet, assume they cost more than regular rolls, are they worth the extra $$. Chris

I haven't used them personally but a local guy is going to them and getting away from a chopping head and I had heard they are some where around 1,100 dollars a row

Why not build up your rolls with a welder? I did this with my previous corn head as well as the one I own now. I welded the rolls so they are now pretty well straight instead of tapered. They work a lot better. The field looks like it has been mowed when I get done. Mike

Lots of questions. Do you take the rolls off to weld, I assume you would need to grind on them to get them straight when done welding. They look like cast iron, any problems welding them? Looks like the shaft would get hot enough to affect the gearbox seals? Do you grind a square edge on them when done welding? I'm cheap enough to try this. Chris

We've never taken them off to weld them up... We do however flip the head over so it's upside down. lots easier to get at the rolls to weld and grind that way. We strip off all the tin work first. :) FYI it's almost impossible to grind enough off so they don't "tick" when turning by hand. As long as you can turn by hand you should be okay, because the corn will knock the edge off soon...
