550 Massey Gear shifting trouble

While unloading, I shifted my 550 gear drive from 1st to neutral.

The shift lever went to the neutral position but the transmission stayed in 1st.

I had no problem shifting nor have I been having problems shifting from gear to gear or putting the transmission into neutral.

I can not get the shift lever back into the 1st gear position.

Has anyone had a problem like this?

I’m thinking it’s the lockup balls in the shifting spool but it’s been about 15 years since I worked on a 3speed Massey gear drive transmission.

I have a so-called factory service manual and it doesn’t show the shifting spool.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

I have had a lot of sleeps since I last ran/fixed a 550 but do remember the telescoping tube on the shift linkage that you had to loosen then tighten when you moved the transmission to tighten the belts. Could this be the problem area?

Like was said, I would try adjusting the shifting rod. Loosen the set screw and try to get things back where they should be. Either making the rod longer or shorter. Might work???

That was usually the problem on my 510. Occasionally the set screws seemed to let go a little and the tube slipped just enough that the linkage would not line up. Not hard to fix if thats all it is.

someone needs tobe in the cab workin the shiftewr while you chek out whats goin on with linkages , ,, blow all the dust and crude of f 1st ,,, take a can of wd 40 with you and grease and oil all the linkages ,,like others said , linkage probably slipped IF YOU ARE LUcKY,, but with my 300 diesel ,, I was not ,. that was 10 yrs ago and I still have not found time to repair the bent fork in the tranny .
