213 Flex head on a JD 4400

I recently picked up a black reel 213 flex head. Planning on putting it on a 1975 4400 combine. Upon picking it up, I realized it's set up to attach with the slide pins on the bottom. It does not have any holes to bolt to the feederhouse. The combine has holes, but no slide pins. What I'm wondering is: Is there a way to adapt either the head or the feederhouse to make this work?

don't really remember too much, we had one, but sure it is not that big of a problem. maybe drill some holes in the platform to line up with the feederhouse holes. good luck

What combine was he running this on? I have an earlier 4400 but it has the std. mounting system. Was the black reel flex head a later style head...still should have had std. mounts, maybe he was useing it on a dis-similar combine and made changes to it. (???)

we put a black reel head on a older 6600, we cut a hole with a torch and put a two bolt to hold head on. one bolt on each side of feeder house.

As I remember the black reel heads have a nut welded in the back plate for a 5/8" or 3/4" bolt to go into. You may or may not have this hole in the front plate of your feederhouse but if you do not it is not hard to put there. The older heads used a bolt going all the way through but the black reel heads use the bolt into the threaded insert. A little measuring and you should be good to go. Mike

The guy I bought it from had it on a 4400 and a 6620. Both of his combines had the newer style feederhouse plate with the slide pins. There are no holes along the bottom of the head at all. I'm guessing, as several of you said, it will probably be easiest to just drill some holes along the bottom plate of the head to match up with the feederhouse.

The 200 series grain headers do not use the 1/2 carriage bolts like the corn heads do. There are not the slotted hole like the corn head uses. Look in the picture close you can see the 5/8 holes just under the throat opening. There are 5 holes. One in the center than two on each side. The double side ones are for different Combine sizes. Your 4400 will use the center one and the two closest ones on the sides. The JD 6600-7700 would use the center one and the two outside ones.

Your feeder house front plate may not have the correct holes in it. All you have to do is measure where they go. I then use a bi-metal hole saw and put in a 1 1/4 hole. This allows for some miss-aliment as the header will set on a little different each time. Just use a large washer under the 5/8 bolt head.

PS the factory "hole" in the feeder house is a square one. It is usually about 4 inches up and about six inches in from each side of the bottom of the feeder house front sheet. Then one directly in the center.

In the picture you can clearly see the square holes. I never use the center one.

This is an old 6600 feeder house, I am pointing at the grain header attaching hole. This one has a bolt in it which is plugging the hole.

Directly below is the corn head attaching hole.....

Here are the bolt holes in the head. (Where the bolt is sticking out) I would suggest that you get a 5/8 national coarse tap and clean the holes first.
