Those of you that read my posts know that my father runs one of my old Fords during harvest season for me and has always been like my right hand doing whatever it took to get the job done.Every since we finished corn back in September he has gotten very short of breath several times and cant hold out to do anything.Wednesday morning he called me from a couple miles from home saying I needed to come get him because he couldnt breathe. When I got to him he was slumped over the steering wheel of his truck and in VERY bad shape.I rushed him to the hospital and luckily they got him stabilized. He spent wednesday and thursday in ICU and has now been moved to a heart center in a bigger city close to us.He is 63 and has always smoked so we thought his lungs were probably gone but the respitory doctor said his lungs look great for someone that has smoked as long as he has.The heart is where the problem is.The doc said he only has 20% working and they are going to do a heart cath on Monday to try to find out why.I have been preparing myself for the day he couldnt run "his" combine for several years now buy it really hit me hard yesterday.I still like around 300 acres of sorgum for a few people and after I came home from the hospital I decided to go run for a while to get as much done before Monday as I could.I went to the field where he was cutting to get on the combine he runs for me and finish where he started but from the moment I pulled in the field it didnt seem right without him there.I fired up "his" combine and started into the first rows but had to stop for a second to gather myself up when I realized that for the first time in a LONG time he was not there with me while I was cutting. He is in great hands and is also in good spirits and I hope and pray they will get him back going soon because my custom harvesting will never be the same without him.

I went through that in the fall of 1999.

Dad died in August 99 and that October was pretty tough.

As I was running the best corn we had ever had I just kept thinking I wish dad could have seen this corn.

I was on my own for the first time and it took a few years to get use to it.

You will get use to it. But we"re hoping you don"t have to just yet.

Good luck!

Gary

I was combining corn on a very cold Sunday morning Dec. 6, 1992 when my wife came out to the field to tell me about my father. He was 69 and his life just stopped sitting in the bathtub. Later that day after dealing with everything, I went back to the field. Then the emotion rolled over me like a wave. Fortunately it didn't last long. For better or worse, separation had already come, thanks to mother. I had been on my own, struggling to survive, for four years.
Hopefully they can help your father, and he can have many more years.
It sounds like you have been the "point" man for years, but now you really know it. It can be a lonely spot at times. But you will get used to it.
If I didn't have things to tend to here, I would enjoy getting out of this wretched climate and coming down there and helping out.

Prayers sent, And I hope everything goes good on Monday. I have been going through the same thing cense September with dad so I know how you feel. Think positive and take it one day at a time and don't let get you down, Things will get better in time. Bandit

Praying for your dad, you and your family. Keep the faith modern medicine is amazing. I've been thru a double bypass and when I had recovered enough I felt fantastic. The heart is an amazing organ it can recover from some serious problems.

Prays sent for your Father. Hopefully this is just a warning for him. They can do wondrous things today in heart care. He really should QUIT smoking.

Hopefully your combine co-pilot will be back with you soon.

Prayers sent...At least you still have him in whatever capacity We never know how many helping hands and go-fers or advisory council they offer till they are gone. Lost mine on Christmas 14 years ago and still have things I want to run by him.

Prayers sent for not only your dad but for you and dealing with the situation.

God Bless you and your family

Sorry to hear about your dad Haley, Hope all goes well and he is back fully fit soon. I lost my dad 6 years ago, i hope yours is with you for many more years, i still miss mine.

Keeping you in my thoughts.

Prayers sent.
My Dad is 77, and while he'd never drive a combine, he does help me a lot. I know the day is coming when he won't be able to any more...
