Video of Picking Corn

thanx for letting us ride along , O piker done very well , except ,,.. wonder if anyone else started countin the wild ears that jumped out of the elevater ,, ya know what , ? I think I would put a chiken wire hardware cloth on that piker ,,pops new idea 1 row was bad about that too ,, but we didn't think it was real bad ,,,

Those werent rocks. They were actually chunks of Ice!! On that first set of rows I took my combine had pushed up a flare in the mud and In that down corn I couldnt see how low the snouts were on the picker and they busted off some of that frozen mud and pulled them into the machine. Dad and I stopped and picked them out before I went around again.

Yea I saw that. The problem is kinda 2 fold. One the field went almost 200 bpa shelled so there was way more ears out there than that picker was ever ment to handle. Two, normaly I run in first gear but in order to keep my momentum up in that mud I had to run in second so I think that picker was giving me a few choice words when I was done. I have to replace that elevator because it has been in the side of one to many wagons so it is to far gone to gix. When I get the new elevator on there im going to make a cover for it to eliminate the ear falling out problem.

Thanks for the video.

For the elevator cover. Just put a piece of flat iron across the top side of the elevator every 4 foot or so. Then cut strips of ply wood about 5-6 inches wide and the full length of the sheet. Then bolt the plywood on the flat irons. We always left a little cap on each side. That way you could still see the inside of the elevator.

Some of the later New Idea pickers had this cover from the factory. Like the one in the picture.

Yea i had something like that in mind, just havent got that far yet. I have way to many projects right now and unfortunatley this old girl has to be at the bottom of the list.

Very creative. I am amazed at how steady the video is. Seems like that elevator and camera would bounce a lot more than that.

ollikid ,,if you want to really watch the ears bounce , you can try some of my open pollinated ngmo white corn ,,. stuff grows 15 ft tall ,and most the ears are a ft or more long ,,and are usully 6ft in the air..that white corn is a challenge to any piker .
