On Sunday Nov. 17 we had some tough winds here in east central IN. During this wind and rain storm (didn't seem that bad) I was out in the garage working on a project.
A barn 2 miles west of where I live that I rent where I kept equipment became like a parachute and the wind came through from the southwest and lifted it up, broke the posts off and took it down, in the process dumping beams and debris over equipment I had stored in there. I could not believe it, I drove by the barn last Sunday night and it was completely gone! Straight line winds were clocked up to 70 mph in this area. A couple trees were uprooted nearby. A friend five miles southwest had a 50x90 Cleary pole barn that got lifted up and away also in the storm.
I spent this past week cleaning debris so to get a loader in to get ready to lift beams of equipment. Wow, not what I had in mind for fun in late November.
A John Deere steel wheel rake that I had on a planter trailer took a beating and looks to have a bent frame and bent wheels. The blunt force of the beams coming down mashed the jack on the trailer from vertical to horizontal. My early (1965) 701 Uni-picker has a elevator bent over like a banana, a beam on it with the husking bed sprung toward the right and something fell on the corn head. The 2 row NI 325 picker in there has a beam on it and broke the support for the elevator and is on the elevator. The New Idea 402 rake that we repainted and rebuilt in the school ag shop this past year has beams laying all over it.
It could have been worse, could have been a fire. Going to try to fix and keep on going. I am thankful...it could been a tornado.
The Uni I had only had a couple years, it didn't have a dent on it...The 2 row picker I bought off a neighbor, it was nice and straight, neighbor owned it 37 years.
If anyone knows of sheet metal and a good usable elevator for 727 husking bed near Indiana, I may need to talk to you...
Have a good Thanksgiving everyone.
