Here is a photo of a combine that is being saved and will be restored by Farmamerica www.farmamerica.org

Several items are not on the machine, as we had to remove them to get it out of the shed where it had been stored for some 35 years.

Pretty amazing that all 4 front tires were still up and after a grease cleanup, new switch, new control wires and freeing the stuck roller chains on the electric lift, the header raised like it was brand new.

Of course the engine is solidly stuck.

Dan,

I know where there is a 21A not that far from you. It's in Cavalier County sitting outside in a grove.

Before you pull the engine, remove the starter to make sure that isn't stuck. Dad bought a Cockshutt with similar engine cheap as owner said that engine was stuck.

We were preparing to pull the engine and I thought to remove the starter - it was stuck. Pried the starter out, engine turned freely! Replaced the bendix on the starter and started the engine right up. We ran that combine for about 10 more years.

Also wire an auxiliary ground wire from the battery to a starter mounting bolt (I used a length of #8 coated electrical wire). Those old combines were originally grounded through the frame, but age, rust and corrosion reduced the ground circuit ability to turn the starter.

Glad to see another combine saved...The 21-A's are one of my favorite old combines....Get us some pictures when its finished...I had a perfect engine for it but its now in my 1941 Massey-Harris 101 Super tractor..

I'm sure glad your saving this machine. Let me know if you need any parts. I have been stock piling for quite a few years. Make sure to take plenty of photo's during the restoration. Good Luck

Thanks for the offer, M-P. I'm in this with Ron and several others. There's a very good chance you'll be hearing from us at some point.

Is that flathead motor a Chrysler or a Continental?

Its a Chrysler..Massey never used 6 cylinder Continentals in
the combines but did in the SP corn pickers...

Ron & Rich,

As Blaine has said all Massey Harris gassers where Chrysler Industrial Engines. You need to start with the name plate on the right rear of the machine. The serial number will tell you the year of the machine. The first two numbers are the year produced. The engine number will tell you if size and whether its American or Canadian. The C is for Canadian the Star is for American. You need to know because they are not the same engine. I have posted a few pictures along with some books I bought off of E-bay and copied a parts book off a dealer in Mt. Hope, Kansas. I enlarged the parts book and double sided it & could make you a copy and send to you guys. The second block number is off on of my grandfathers MH 21 machines. It had no name plate and has the American motor T112 motor. The picture is not the best but you can make out the stars on the block plate. The block plate is on the front of the engine just below the thermostat housing. Search Massey Harris 21 combine and see some pictures of us pulling the motor for teardown. I would recommend this for method for looking over machine. It looks like your half way there anyway with the machine. My e-mail is [email protected] feel free to send your questions or pictures.
