1440 vs 1460

I would like to know some of the features
of the 1440 vs 1460. My 7700 just blew up
and I"m looking for the best rotor combine
in the 10k range.

I just bought a 1460 myself and have done a little research on these machines but I am no expert by no means. As best as I can tell the 1440 and the 1460 have the same size rotor and cleaning capacity. The big difference is the horse power and the grain tank size. I believe the 1440 has 145 hp with a 150 bushel grain tank and the 1460 has 160 with 180 bushel grain tank. I know some people ran a 6 row head on a 1440 and got along fine. I was actually looking for a 1440 but got a great deal on the 1460 so I bought it. You should be able to find one in that price range pretty easy.

The biggest difference between a 1440 and a 1460 is the size of the transmission and final drives. The 60 is more hp, but that can be fixed with a turbo. The old 1440 we had was plenty strong as a 60 with an M&W turbo. However the weak transmission and finals kept us collecting parts. They didn't like mud long term even with a mudhog. I also believe the clean grain elevator was smaller on a 1440.

From my understanding the 1440's had some issues with weak front axles. Check for cracks on the big steel tube that runs between the final drives, across the width of the combine. They tend to break where the tube meets the frame just inside of the tire. I think there was an aftermarket kit to reinforce this area, but I could be mistaken.

1440 1460 have same separator & elevators, sieves, rear axle, 24" rotor, 60 has bigger front axle & final drives, transmission, hydrostatic motor & pump, 1480 was 30" rotor diameter with 60 finals & trans/hydro, rear axle bigger yet, also wider feeder house & larger grain elevator. There are some other minor details.

I own a 1460 and it is a great machine. You should be able to find all kinds of 1460's in your price range. The problem will be heads. Be prepared for sticker shock on a IH head. They cost more than green ones.

local welding shop removed the final drives and inserted a tube inside the axle tube and welded the ends, as for going to an IH from a jd why don't you keep your 7700 heads and put them on the 1460?
