is it possible to replace rasp bars without taken the feeder house off. I do have the JD manuals but it isn't clear, it tells how to do it with the cylinder out. I'm done for the season and combine in shed. Thank God for a nice uneventful harvest.

The easiest way is to pull the feeder house off that gives you the room you need to change the rasp bar and check the concave for ware and damage. Bandit

Simple answer is yes, you can change the bars with the feeder house on. But you have to work on your knees from the bottom cleanout door. Its difficult to get to the bolts, dirt down your neck, ect, ect. By removing the feeder house you can get to everything easily and inspect the concave and other components in the area. I leave the feeder house attached to a head when I remove them. Really not a bad job.

I'm with Scott. I use the cornhead when removing the feederhouse. It takes some time to take it off and put it back on but I can't imagine the pain it would be to put bars in with it on. For me it's much easier to stand and wrench than trying to work thru the smaller openings. I've replaced 5 sets of bars over the years and always taken it off. JMHO

You can do it from the top. Take off the head and lower the feederhouse all the way down. Take the door out that goes in front of the cylinder and then the top cover off the feederhouse. Lay on your belly on the feederhouse.

While changing the bars can be done with the feederhouse on it's much easier to just take it off. I always put a pallet on the forks of the loader and put this under the feederhouse. I then use a chain and come-along to the top shaft to adjust for height both for coming off and going on. It's a fairly easy job to take one off but a little time consuming. If you have to lay on your belly to change the bars it's likely you won't try it again that way the next time. There's no better time to check the concave at feeder removal as well. Mike
