I was wondering if you looked for a cause on the thrown rod in your 1660.

A long time friend and IH mechanic told me they had several 1680's that lost oil pumps at the dealership he worked for. He claimed they didn't see the problem often if ever in the 1660's, but advised me to replace the pump in my 1660..... which I did .

Just curious if your failure was oil pump related.

Lube. was fine. I think it was a rod bolt. You could see a few lines around the outside of one of the bearings like it rotated and grabbed a few times before the other rod bolt let go.
I got a used truck engine from a mechanic, who by all accounts, is an expert. He put new rod bearings in the "new" engine, although it wasn't necessary. At least I know the rod bolts are torqued correctly.
Book wants this engine running 2700 no load!!!!!!!!!!!! Yikes! I think that's the problem. I slowed it down when I got it a few years ago. I don't find that it loses RPM under load much at all. It's running right at, or just under 2500, where the alarm doesn't sound.
Mechanic thinks the blown engine was a reman. I'm wondering if the rods were not torqued correctly.
