Gleaner E II Combine

In 2014 I am going to plant about 10 acres of corn. If it goes well I will be adding acreage to that the following year. I have all the equipment already to put in as much corn/wheat/beans as I want but I do not own a combine. Heading out to pick up a rock picker I bought yesterday and saw a Gleaner E II on the side of the road for sale. Looks in good shape, fella says he used it for wheat recently and the fairly new and mostly shiny sections on the sickle would make me think this is true. He is moving up to a flex head. Its a really small machine. Don't think that grain head could be 10' wide. I have some questions if anyone could help:

1) would this be a good starter machine?
2) Assuming it starts and runs well, what is it worth?
3) Can I harvest 30" row corn with it and how hard is it to get a corn head?

I could replace it or keep it for backup if I expand in the next few years. Just hate to see it go by if it is a worthy option. THanks!

I don't think you'll find a better machine. I never saw an E designated "II". But there were a lot of changes from the first E to the last. Then they produced the EIII for maybe one year, before going to the K. So, the assumption is there was an EII in there somewhere. AC did that more than once. I never saw a D17 I or II. They started labeling them when they introduced the series III.
One of the differences from an early to late E was reinforced header lift cylinder anchor brackets. I had a 330 on an early E, and found out the hard way about the brackets.
There's probably a head somewhere. But you might have to look a while, and travel. A drawback to Gleaners is headers were not interchangeable between models. If you can do some alteration/fabrication, you have some more options. The three row I had was an F330, with an old two row throat welded into it.

Sorry, that was an EIII. I stopped and looked at it and then spent 5 hours snaking down back roads with a rock picker I had bought. Somewhere in there I dropped an "I". Appreciate the help. Can't decide whether to pick this up or no. It's cute but it's small and not having the corn head is a problem because it should be there and you know the seller is not going to want to give me a break on the price sufficient to buy and bring home a corn head.

EIII might even be better. As I recall, the EIII was more similar to the later K, except it still had the AC engine. So corn heads that would go right on might be easier to find.
