Help with mud pushing Flex head (JD)

Yes we have mud. Nearly every fall and its sticky. Anyway I bought a well used 918 flex head to replace a 215 flex. Had been sitting on dealer lot quite some time. Rebuilt most of it however after adjusting the cutter bar till it was straight and the right angle for my tires the stabilizer end drags really hard. Not at the cutter bar but at the skid plate under the stabilizer. Seems to be square with the axle behind. Whats the fix? Thanks Tom

Didn't have this with the 200 series.

Do you have the dial-a-matic? Maybe raise the head some putting more weight on the combine allowing the head to actually flex up and down. IF that works you could re-adjust the setting in the box on the right side of the platform so "1" is the new lowest. Does that newer head have the indicator on the right side showing how much the cutter bar is flexing?? If it is at "1" you maybe putting the weight of the head on the cutterbar. Is the pressure tank turned on to assist the head in raising over bumps in the ground? If the wobble box side is dragging you could put more tension on the spring that helps support or pull it upward. I would assume the head is level with the combine and not needing adjustment. Maybe you just have to mark it up to the wet soil and that it isn't fit to work. I haven't had any of those problems either with my 213 or 216. Good luck.

Take the long dividers off if you haven't already, then tighten the balance/float spring up on the LH side. When you have it raised up, the LH end will be a little higher than the rest of the knife.

If the left side is still plowing you need to adjust the wobble box spring and also the linkage that stabilizes the wobble box. This should be done any time the cutterbar tilt is changed. Your book tells you this and how to do it. Mike
