The one that got away.........

I have only myself to blame.

Found a 227 corn head, not far from me. Would fit my 91 combine. It was part of a "package" deal. Well, it got sold separately, before I got a call in to the seller, so I says, OK it was not meant to be. Found out how much the seller wanted for the whole package, too. No room for another machine, so I was not interested in the whole package.

Seller calls me 2 days later; previous buyer wants out, so I say, Yes, I want the corn head, and any parts I need off the combine to make it work. (Combine was rough, worn out, not shedded and was headed to scrap). We agree on a price, and that I will call him to get address, and set up a time on next Saturday to pick it up. I cannot get there any earlier, because we are swamped at work. So, OK he says.

I DID tell myself that it had seemed too easy, and don"t be surprised if you lose it........

So, I call today to get his address, an leave a message. He calls back, and says he is sorry, but he sold the whole package, for a couple hundred more than he was asking. Apparently the buyer is going to harvest the un-eaten corn off of his deer food plot, and sell it or re-seed it? You got ME on that one.

Now, I am not mad, but what do you think? I did jinx myself a bit, so I am not surprised at what happened. Can"t really blame the guy for selling it; CL buyers are not real dependable, and this guy had cash in hand. And he did not know me from Adam, after all.

I know I should have moved heaven and earth to get over there and get the head, but work comes first, we are super busy, and I have a lot of responsibilities there.

The trials of the micro-farmer never cease........look forward to any opinions!

Well the old saying of "money talks and BS walks" would fit here, especially being a CL ad. However the guy should have called you to check with you before he sold it. I've lost deals over the years like this and even to people I thought were friend dealing behind my back after I had a deal agreed to. Bottom line is don't feel at ease until the item is setting on your own land.

Ouch...I've got a corn head for a 91 IH but you will have to buy the combine that its on..I need the shed space so will sell my extra 91 IH.

I have a collector friend tell me several times that you really don't own it until it is in your possession. I think of that when I think I have a deal made on a promise.

I feel ya... I had to buy a junker Deere 45 combine to get the 313 corn head. I wanted just the head but the seller said it was a package deal. I hauled it 400 miles. It pulled like a parachute. I spent twice as much on gas pulling the whole unit rather than just the header but I didn't have that option.

I sent a check the day we made the deal. The guy was kind enough to wait two days on the check to arrive in the mail.

If you would have taken a day off work to load up the corn head it would have cost you that days wages more than the price you agreed to. Like you, I'm often not willing to spend the vacation time, so when a sale falls though I just forget about it and look for another one.

As a seller I only hold an item after someone has put down a deposit to hold the item for X amount of time.
