JD 6620 rear wheel assist

I do not seem to get much assist from the rear wheel drive on my JD 6620. This is my first seaon to use this combine and I am not impressed by the drive system. A farmer friend uses JD 7720s with rear wheel drive and he says they should push the combine through some pretty slippery stuff.
I am wondering if the filter could be plugged or some other restriction in the hydro system. I can tell from the drop in speed that the hydro is switching into rear wheel drive.
Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to fix it? Thanks

It should make a noticeable difference in poor conditions. It might not spin out in tacky mud, but it should have enough power to be visibly helping when your front axle is starting to spin. If you have a third, smaller hose coming from each wheel, you can check how much is leaking past the motor by taking the line off, put the transmission in high gear and hold the brakes while moving the hydro handle. A small amount of leakage is normal, but you shouldn't have it spraying out. Either way, it sounds like your wheel motors are probably tired. Only other place for the oil to go would be through the bleed line (if it has one) on the valve that engages the rear wheels.

Thanks for your reply. I will try your suggestion and see what happens. It did seem to be better yesterday when I was combining and it may just be me and the fact that this is the first time I have used the combine.
Thanks again. LOL

I had a similar problem. Depending on the make of the RWA, you have to engage it before you get stuck. There is a directional valve in the wheels, which senses direction and velocity, so you kind of have to be moving either forward or reverse for the assist to kick in. At least that is what I have noticed.

Jack the rear wheels off the ground, put the gear case in Neutral, and push the hydro lever forward, engage the RWA; if the wheels spin on their own, great. IF you have to give the wheel a spin to get it going, and it keeps going, then you have the system I described. My SPF has the above mentioned system; it works great as long as I don"t stop. I do not know if this is normal or not, as it is the only one I have had.

Best of luck!
