Massey 540 grinds gears with clutch to the floor

This combine never used to do this, but now it seems like no matter how hard I push the clutch its like I am not pushing it in at all. I tried adjusting the transmission break but that didn"t seem to help either. The clutch will still work to stop the machine, but I notice this grinding most when I have left the combine sit idling and then get in to go. I don"t think this is the sticky clutch problem because of the fact the clutch still works to stop the machine, but then again I am here because I am at a loss. Anyone else experience this?

I had that problem with a 410 on of the springs came lose in the clutch disk exact same thing you could stop with it but the gear would grind.

Josh, the springs he is referring to I believe are a part of the clutch itself. I would agree you have a clutch problem, either warped disk or parts out if no adjustment will cure it. I am not familiar with your model well enough to know for sure, but you may check if there is a clutch finger adjustment available, sometimes that will allow the fingers to release further as a temporary solution, but long term it will still need a clutch.

I haven't worked on a 540 but done some clutch work on 410's and 550's. They are pretty easy to work on. Just a bit of a chore in behind the left wheel. You might want to pop the wheel off the first time you work on the clutch, but once you know your way around leave it on.

We used to wear out clutches every couple of years until I finally convinced the rest of the family to run in 1st gear with the variable set high rather than in second with the variable set low. Never had a clutch sticky, we always wore them til they slipped.

It was one of the springs on the clutch disk you have to loosen up and take off the drive belt and take the clutch off I haven't done one in a while I think you have to take the clutch assembly apart on the combine not to hard

I have had this problem on my 510 and my 550.
In both cases the problem was caused by dirt and rust
Build up on the transmission input shaft spines, and on
The driving lugs on the steel intermediat plate which is between the friction discs
All that it took to fix was a good clean up job.
Can be bit tricky to get the outer clutch disc splines to
Line up when reassembling, but overall not a difficult fix

The clutch must be taken off in pieces, as the final drive housing prevents it from being taken off as unit.
About a 2 hour job .

I have this problem as well. I have cleaned the clutch pack . I then tried to adjust the linkage on the pedal. With the engine off it shifts normal through all gears. My clutch disks appear to be in good shape. Suggestions?

Last time I battled this, get the combine out in a open area, run the variable speed middle/slow, kill the motor, shift to 3rd, depress the clutch and brakes and restart the motor. They were pretty bad about getting hung over the winter. If I remember correctly the clutch pedal had a hole in the arm so you could depress it and install a bolt to hold the clutch released while it sat for the off season.
