JD 444 cornhead stalk stompers

I have a 444 head with stalk stompers. I like the job it does mashing the stalks. I'm thinking about going to cover crops on my corn and bean stubble. My old drill works ok in bean stubble, but I don't want to have to disk the stalks twice to seed in the cornstalks. I'm thinking about getting another set of stalk stompers and put them on the middle 2 rows so all the stalks are mashed down, then I should be able to get thru them with my old grain drill. Has anyone ever put an extra set on a 4 row head? Looks like I'll have to trim some off of the rear of the skid plate so I can get into and out of the head. Any ideas?? Thanks, Chris

What guys around here have done is make a heavy roller to run the stalks down between the tires. Start out with a 8-10 inch pipe. Then put a floating bracket on it. Just let the weight mash the stalks down.

We put six stalk stompers on a 643 cornhead. When taking the head off, I slip a short piece of 3/4 inch pipe about 10-12 inches long into the spring on the stomper on each end. It supports the cornhead enough so that the the back end of the stomper doesn"t catch on the feederhouse.
