Any suggestions?

Still working on the straw chopper on the 55. It still vibrated the last few hundred rpm on the tach. So far I have had it balanced twice, replaces bearings and shimmed in cast housings since they were loose, replaced belt, replaced bearings in idler where it changes from chain to belt, replaced bearings on seperator drive pulled where the one belt comes off the engine and the two belts go to the beater shaft. I am at a loss. I don't know where else to look.

Was the balance performed at the RPM that you are
running it at? The shaft may be "whipping", like an
noodle, at a higher RPM.

The other thought I have is; did the sheaves
(pulley) get balanced? That should be balanced as
well.

Best of luck!

Yes the pulley was balanced. They also recut the groove as it was worn uneven. I am not sure the rpm it was balanced at but I can find out.

I know you don't want to hear this but can you find another chopper? Sometimes things just can't be fixed.

Trust me, I have thought of that. Unfortunatley 55's are as rare as hens teeth around here.

Chester, I would start by isolating the various components. Unhook the chopper itself and see if the vibration goes away. If it does, there is your problem. If it doesn't, keep removing belts or chains on other drives until you find where the problem is. Mike

Mike, i did that. I had both elevators, the cylinder and the drive belts all disconnected. Still vibrated. Unhook the chopper and the vibration is gone. I threshed my oats saturday and it worked fine without the chopper. I just don't understand why it is still vibrating when I have literaly replaced everything. I am ready to just look for one of the straw spreaders and call it a day. I am using it in oats and soybeans. I just need the stuff spread enough to get the plow thru in the spring.

take this advice with a grain of salt ,, don't knowhow bad it is vibratin ,,, but I bet under a load and at work it will level out and the vibration will minimize ,,

Chester, if you have the vibration isolated to the chopper itself then I would remove the hammers from the chopper and see if the center vibrates. If it does not then it is obviously the hammers. Two hammers can weigh the exact same thing but can be carrying that weight at different points. Check the center for runout then have the whole assembly dynamically balanced, not just statically. I used to run a straw spreader on one combine I owned after running a chopper. I hated it. Mike
