early jd 4400 cylinder tach

Does any one know of a place to buy a replacement tach cable or sender/sensor. I haven't looked into which it is I think the book said cable. Would like to buy online I don't really care for either of the Deere dealers around but if that's the only choice that'll have to work. Thanks. Unless there is a tip as to why it's not working this one was sitting for around 8yrs and the owner didn't remember if it was working prior to being parked

Check and see if the cylinder tack drive oring (# 9, part # H83078,in the picture, List $13.60)is still there. I would bet that it is broken. They only last a year or so.

They are driven off of the over beater on the right side of the combine. The over beater is driven by a small belt that is behind the main cylinder drive belt. The over beater has a small plastic pulley on it. Then above it is the cylinder tack drive. It has a smaller pulley on it. The belt/oring gets just stretched on with a half twist in it.

You can check to see if the tack/cable is good by spinning it with your finger. Some one watching in the cab will be able to see the cylinder tach bounce when you turn it by hand. This pulley goes the opposite rotation than the cylinder.

JD, you mentioned the o-ring having a half twist in it. I used to have a 4400 and a 7720. One of them had a half twist in it and the other didn't. For some reason I'm thinking the 4400 went on straight and the 7720 had the twist. I'm relying on memory here. Refresh it, please..:) Mike

Thanks I'll check that today I may have some small wheat fields to custom cut since the guy who runs them has a 20ft header and they are small enough that it is more of a pain to jockey the combine around

Mike your are correct that some do not have the twist in them. I do not remember 100% either. He can find out real easy as long as he knows some have the twist.

The cylinder tach is handy to have working but in Wheat your run a JD cylinder speed as fast as it will go. They do not have a very fast "HIGH" speed.

Then clean the rock trap out and close the concave down as close as you can get it without it hitting the cylinder bars.

IF he does that the cylinder is set. Then it is just the sieve, chaffer, and air to set.

Wheat is easy to get set for most of the time.

Yep the little o-ring belt is missing the pulley is missing on the tach cable side. Well that's good to know about the settings for wheat but there could be some beans this fall too for another guy and next year will probably doing 8ac of corn

Btw I know it's an early one but would anyone be able to tell me the year of this machine the serial number is 13141 thanks

Abilene Machine has them on line for around $8-9. I almost order one yesterday but the were in stock at my local dealer.

The little pulley missing could be just that way because the plastic wore out. It also could be because the bearing in the lower tach drive is bad. When they lock up the plastic pulley is sometimes damaged. Turn it by hand and it should turn freely.

The good and bad news. The lower tach drive is only sold as an assembly, pulley included, and JD does still offer it. The BAD news. The part number is AH75620 List price $176.57. OUCH!!! Some good news all the earlier serial number OO series combines used the same lower tach drive. So just about any of them before 100,000 would work. 3300,4400,6600,and 7700.

Check your serial number out again. The serial numbers where four digit 1970 thru 1973 and then they went to six digits. The machine serial number would be on the left side of the combine just above the tailings auger. It is on the side brace. IT IS not the number on the sticker in the cab.

444-----1970
3301----1971
6501----1972
9501----1973
101301-----1974
151501-----1975
201251-----1976
250501-----1977
300001-----1978
350001-----1979

Yes they did built the 4400 one more year than the rest of the OO series combines. The 4420 did not come out until 1980. The 1979 4400s had some common cab parts with the JD 4420 that the earlier machines did not have. Plus the longer tail housing an longer straw walkers too.

That's interesting that's what is wrote in the book and pretty sure the tag is the same but I'll double check. I did turn the drive and it does turn freely I ordered the 176 dollar part you are right ouch. I ordered some other parts that it needs the unload anger bearing at the end and the u-joints in the loading anger also the one inspection door for the loading anger was rusted not sure I'll be able to get the other one out but at least I'll have a good one to fab another instead of paying another 37 dollars for a simple door. I'm working on the head this evening needs couple sections and lube haven't really looked at the corn head yet but it's a good thing I got a 3point head mover in the deal because I can't move the corn head with my little skid steer and the door that both heads fit in the door isn't high enough and the door the combine fits in isn't wide enough for the heads. But that's the way it goes when you don't have the money for a pole barn and you are using a 100yr old dairy/cow barn for storage

(quoted from post at 22:49:27 06/28/13) Well I just looked at the serial plate. Type E 4400. Serial # 13141 H.

Then it should be a 1973 flat screen JD 4400. It should not have a rotary screen over the radiator.
