Okay guys, I have a speltz crop coming and will be using my IHC threshing machine, a 22x36 or something like that, I forget. BOught it years back from an Amish friend for $100.00. He tells me it was set for oats last and threshed real clean. Any advice or tutorials around I can look at? I do have the manual which says speltz is easy to thresh and to use as few concaves as needed. It says about the same for oats.

Thoughts or advice? Yes, I have a binder too. It's only 3.5 acres, an experiment to see how speltz does on my ground.

Sounds like you are going to be in for a good time. Going to pull that binder with your horses or is it tractor drawn?

Gonna have to be the tractor. The horses aren't quite up to something like that yet. Training takes time, that's what you get for letting the old teams die and not training up the new ones. Plus, it's a 1920's Adriance-Platt. Gonna take it real easy on the old girl. I did bind a field of weedy oats with it after I got it working, real short straw did cause a few issues. The speltz is close to 4 foot tall right now! Won't be any short straw this year!

Speltz is easy to thresh, similar to oats. It is very light, and maybe a little bigger than oats. The cylinder is probably set about right, you may need to open up the chaffer and decrease air a little bit. Just watch what comes out the back and adjust as necasary.
