Has anyone changed the ball bearings on the rear of the straw walker on an IH 715? I am having troule with how to get a puller on the old bearings to get them off. All ideas are appreciated.

I am with Tractorman, Clean it up good and use a torch to cut the balls out of the bearing.Once you get the outer race out of the way then carefully use the torch to split the inner part of the bearing off the shaft.I have changed many many bearings on my machines and I very seldom ever use a puller.

In case you cannot use a cutting torch, besides the fire hazard, hit the outer race with a heavy hammer, they should crack & split easy, then remove balls & retainer, then hit inner race with hammer, wear a face shield. The bearings are common 1-1/8 Fafnir self aligning with lock collar.

Thanks guys. I thought of the torch idea but the shaft has wood bushings not too far from the bearing. I will need to provide protection for them. I will try the heavy hammer idea first. Probaly the best way is to pay someone to do it.

Once I got the shaft cleaned up I found out that the bearing is slip fit held in place by a locking collar. Easy removal.

Shouldn't come off too hard. I'm no fan of hammering on a bearing to try to crack the race. Ever since wheat harvest of 1993, I shave around a scar on my face from a fragment of bearing race.
He was a real moron, and I knew better, but he told an 18 year old kid to hold the sledge, to back it up on the bottom, while he smacked top side with a hammer.
I was too dumb and obedient to say no.
He didn't get a scratch.
