JD 4400 combine cylinder bars replacement

My 1978 JD 4400 is going to need new cylinder bars after I get done with wheat and I'm not sure where to purchase them from. Deere wants $220.00 per set of two or over $800.00 for all of them less hardware. I checked Shoup and they want just under $400.00 for all 8 including the hardware. I also saw Abilene Machine have some and are priced a little higher than Shoup. Have not looked at Auscherman. (sp?) Could someone share their experience(s) or recommendations where would be the best place to purchase these? Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

Steve, I always used OEM bars but if I was in your shoes I believe I would go with the Shoup bars. There will be proponents of the Ausherman bars but in my estimation they are too aggressive and make it too easy to damage grain. An original equipment bar in a properly adjusted combine will work very well, thank you. To me, the aggressive bar just masks over other symptoms the operator hasn't taken care of. I'm sure we'll hear screams shortly because of that statement but I've cut beans that were as green as they were in July with original equipment bars and got along just fine. I didn't damage the beans, either. Mike

Mike, I called Shoup for availability and they have plenty. The representative told me their treated bars (non chrome) come from the same foundry as Deere uses so I believe I'll go with Shoup. Thanks!

I'll have another post regarding a cab filter that I'm not sure exactly where it goes.
