JD 40 self propelled

Are these pretty good old machines for hobby farming? Do you suppose most parts are still available from JD and salvage yards to keep one running? Did it share the 4 cylinder gas engine with any of the farm tractors? Wonder how hard would it be to find a two row corn head for one? Thanks.

Did you find a 40? or are you looking for one?Not many 40s are left.I'd be surprised if many parts were still available.JD is slowly phaseing out parts for all the old machines, even the popular/plentiful 55/95.Not many 40s were built, there are probably few to none in salvage yards.A corn head would hard to find. But dont be discouraged, that machine is pretty simple,a lot of parts can be fabricated by a skilled machinist/metalworker.A 40 is pretty small,OK if iou just have a very few acres.I would suggest a more common machine, like a 45 or 55.The 55 si probably the best, most copied, most plentiful machine (still) out there....
