Will a massey 1105 pull my jd 3950 chopper with a hay head on it or do I need at least 120
I"ve heard different things from different people I wanted to hear for someone who has used a chopper before most I talk with have never pulled one

The 3950 has either a 540 RPM Cat. 5 driveline or a 1000 RPM Cat. 5 driveline. The 540 was rated up to 80 hp, and the 1000 was rated up to 150 hp. I do not know what your tractor is running for hp, but if you are over 100 it should work okay. The big advantage with more power is you can keep the cutter full, and it blows the crop in the wagon much better with a full stream- a thin discharge will not hit the back of the wagon all the time and is more likely to blow away with a crosswind, in my experience.

I'm not familiar with the MF tranys, but with that hp if you have good hay and cut with a 12' or larger swath you may not get a slow enough gear. The tractor will run the chopper fine otherwise.

I have chopped 100's of acres with a 3940 and a 4020.We do have the fuel turned up some but that 3950 pulls easier than any other harvester built by anyone.Keep your knives sharp and shearbar adjusted and you will be fine.Today's forage is cut much longer than years ago, nobody uses a screen anymore,we run our 3940 on the course side of the big sprocket and my nutrionist still complains it is to fine.In heavy hay one 12ft swath maybe enough but in later cuttings of alfalfa you will be able to put two together. We now chop with a 4520 as we bought the bigger tractor for tillage.Once in heavy 9ft swaths we used the 3020 because the 4020 was broke down,it was slow but we got that cutting done. The 3940-3950 harvesters were one of the best ever built by anyone the only improvement would be to put a New Holland 824 cornhead on it instead of the Deere head and several farmers in my area have done that.If you have a big tractor the NH 230-240 harvesters are better but for 130 hp or less the 3940-3950 is great.

We have a 7410 JD(105hp) on our 3950 and chop at 3 to 4 mph with a 13ft windrow in 1st cutting and it handles it with ease.

JD Pull type Choppers DON't Have Much of a Blower on them Lucky if you can Get Light amounts into the Wagon,Most of the time it drops it on the Beaters of the wagon,It's a problem with them.we have a 3975 & run a CASE 2390 Turned To 240 HP on it.We Should have Bought another GEHL ,with that you could Blow Silage Into a Wagon Behind the First one.John Deere Pull type Choppers are Low Grade =Check out other brands in your Area that you have a Dealer for ! Because if it john deere YOU WILL Need PARTS I KNOW
