It is not uncommon to have to help them the last little bit to get the latch to reach. I usually would just pull on the slide pipe to get them to latch the last few inches. The whole setup was not the best when new. So you take a few hits and bangs an they don't close correctly. Unless it is a real big issue I would not worry too much about it. If you are going to replace the outer tube then maybe work on the alignments then but other than that there is not much to do to them. They where kind of weak when new.
