36 rows with 38 head

Yes... if the corn is perfect every year, and you're not dragging the fan housing in the mud. Much better results if the planter is adjusted to fit the head.

SO SO. Neighbor did it one year. He adjusted the stripper plates off center he said that helped with header feed.

The corn head is going to be moving the stalk to the outside on the outer rows. Any speed combining and the ears are going to fly over the outside snout and be lost. Don't think you can narrow the older gleaner heads. Ran one on a Case combine for quite a few years.

It will work, but expect some loss....especially if the stalks are dry. Slower ground speed will help. Biggest loss will be on the outer rows.

Can"t the header be slid into 36 inch rows.

The IH heads can be, maybe the Gleaners can as well.

If you just have a few acres you can get by.You can improove losses by just pulling 3 rows. Some heads you can 'adjust' the row width,others-no.Best thing is to plant 38"rows next year.

When running in deep mud, or any mud for that matter, a combine does not always run in the direction the operator is aiming for. The result is running in an irregular pattern. The expression "with fan housing dragging" was referring to deep mud. The fan housing has no sirect effect on the corn head!

Either move the head in to 36" or move planter out to 38" if possible. Planter would be easier I would think.

It works fine. I do it every year. You can run 36" to 40" rows through a 38" head with no problem. Any one who says you can't hasn't shelled much corn. I plant 36" rows and run them through my 438 head on my L2 Gleaner as fast as you want to drive.

Thanks for the input. Have a 438 head on gleaner F3. Have been planting 438 but just bought a 436 planter with no till coulters. Thinking of getting a bigger combine and gathering info as to what head I need.

we picked 36" with a 38" head for several years works alright if your head is in good shape and adjusted correct ,your only off 3" on a 4 row head on the outer rows, inners are 1",we bought a good used A438 head this year, wanted a 36" but this one was to good to pass up it was in dire need of adjustment so we moved it to 36" while we had the tin off,row units weren't bad to move ,we shorten the dog bone drive shafts instead of buying new ones tin was the time consuming part, use to be several people that planted in 48" rows around here man i worked for picked a lot of it 3 rows with a 3 row 38" on a 410 Ferguson, most used a 2 row machine for 48"

In my opinion you wont have any problems with this as long as the corn has a little height to it.I have combined many acres of 38" twin row corn where the "twin" rows are set on 8" apart and it feeds just like it should except where it is real short on dry corners and end rows.I even cut lots of 36" soybeans with a 38" row crop head and have no problems except in really short beans. The short crops dont want to lean in quite as easy as the tall ones.
