What"s the easiest way to go about removing the gib keys so I can take the brake drums off on my Ford 642? A salvage transmission should be coming Monday from Hopf Bros Ag Repair out of Saint Anthony, Indiana.

You need to 'drive' the pulley AWAY from the key.make something to strike on so you dont hit directly on the pulley-like a section of pipe on something.Hook a 'heelbar' under the head of the key and pry,if your lucky the key will come out.Do NOT use a puller on the pulley. You wqill only succeed in breaking the pulley(dont ask me how I know that).Useing a puller with agib key only make it TIGHTER.You can use a puller ONLY after the key is out. And,use plenty of penetrating oil.

Deltared is right, you need to get the drum to at least move away from the key just a little and it will make your life easier.I have never actually removed the brake drum on one but what I do on the other keys is start the wedge tool between the key and the pulley,Then strike the pulley with a sledge and a solid piece of shaft real close to the key.Lots of penetrating oil will help and DONT try to pull the pulley off with the key still in or you will regret it.Why do you need to take the drums off? You might want to make sure the parts yard sends the axle brackets with the trans because the bolt pattern on the trans got bigger on the newer 642's.The brake backing plate bolt pattern also is different on the newer ones.

What exactly do I need to remove to get the drive shafts off if I don't need to remove the brake drums? Just the plate behind them and the finals?

What I would do is remove both final drives, slide each shaft out as far as it will go,and then unbolt the brackets from the axlehousing that holds the trans in place. The brakes will come out with the trans.Dont forget that there is a spotweld on each trans bracket where it bolts to the axlehousing. The trans can be removed by just taking one final and axleshaft off but in the long run it is easier to take them both off so that you arent fighting with one axle trying to line up the trans on the way back in.

Must-have tool. Will pull the key out of anything foreign or domestic. Hardened, beveled, right or left-handed versions. Pulls on the key at precisely the right spot.

Alliscman,I forgot to mention that Claas did build two different hydrostatic transmissions for the 642--one was a two speed and one was a three speed.I did not know if you were aware of this and I hope your replacement trans is the right one.
