New Idea Picker Problem

I have a 1 row 323 New Idea picker, lately it has been wanting to shell off some corn at the end of the ears, the outer most end. i've got the rollers set at the widest setting but its still doing it, anything that i'm missing? or does it do this regardless?

butt shelling. I think the setting should be tightened not loosened to prevent butt shelling. I could be completely backwards on that. Regardless, it's a good picker. I liked the one we had.

The snapping rolls should be closer together to reduce shelling. Also believe they offered "plates" that could be installed on the snapping rolls to help in trashy conditions. These also increased shelling. The last NI pickers if adjusted correctly shelled very little although the JD picker with snapping plates rather than snapping rolls theoretically would be better.

All New Idea pickers shell corn on the ground.I should say every picker without deck plated over the rolls shell corn.IH 234,AC 170-190 and the John Deere 300 are the only ones that do not shell corn on the ground.Alot of the problem is that most corn varities are bred for a combine so they want it to shell easy. Some smaller seed companies still have a few varities that are very good for picking and do not shell as much as others. We quit using our John Deere 237 mounted picker because of the shelling problem and have bought a 300 Deere pulltype. The New Idea is a good picker and the problem is more than likely the corn.

Something You wrote somewhat alarms me. You say LATELY its been shelling. As the crop drys out, & its gets later in the year it will shell more corn! You can reduce the amount shelled by slowing the PTO speed down if this is the case. Having been a dry year in most parts of the country it wouldnt suprise me if thats it.

we always called the pto driven bird and deer feeders! the drier the corn the more they will shell not a lot you can do other then pick sooner

Had the same problem this season. This is my 15th season with the
picker so I know it well. The problem is the dekalb corn that I
planted. Never had a problem with Pioneer in the past.

yeah, earlier in the season it wasn't doing this, so how far should i bring in the rollers? i think there is about 10-12 notches, maybe about half? i'm using Croplan corn, might be the variety too

Close the rolls all the way. If it's pushing stalks ahead and not taking then down you might have to open them some, but I bet you will be fine with them shut all the way. I ran a 324(?)years ago and I don't remember ever not having the rollers shut all the way
