I just use 1x6" pine.Piant them,they will last the life of the combine.That is if you dont run into something....
 
Try to get your pine wood without imperfections, especially knots. They tend to have plenty of sap and makes it more difficult to paint, especially when just cut at the sawmill. Looks better on your show combine.
If its a working girl, you may also want to try to (used) corrugated galvanized sheet metal cut to width. not pretty but most of us got some around on the farm.

Thanks for the replies. I should have said it was for a pickup reel, but I think your comments should still apply.
 

For Profiteer and Hume, I take a 1"x4" and rip it to width. then dido cut a place for the fingers, Hume takes a lot more work drilling mounting holes for fingers, while profiteers just clip on. The machines we cut fescue with sit inside 50 weeks of the year, so I don't bother painting the lumber.
