1460 REEL LIFT

On my 1984 1460 with electric over hydraulics my 1020 head Everything working as is should except for the reel lift. When I lift it up i hear the pump running (pressure) but it does not stop and the reel does not go back down until i do another function such as lifting the head and then it goes back down. I think something is sticking keeping pressure on the up side? using a test light on the solenoid the switch appears to be working correctly. light goes off and on with switch function.
 
It sounds to me as if you have diagnosed it correctly, and alleviated the electrical part as the problem. So it must be the spool, poppet, or whatever else the solenoid moves that is sticking- don't you think?
 
I think so, but before i took apart I wanted to make for sure i was not missing something simple. I have never taken this apart. Is there anything to watch for?
 
Sorry- I have never been into one.
But- if you have no info.- do yourself a favor and look up the parts picture on line and print it off- so you can have it right with you.
I am interested as I recently left behind 40+ years of Gleaner experience and now have a 1660.
 
Check for a bad poppet in the quick disconnects, sometimes the spring gets weak and they won't flow, checks off.
 
This will sound crazy but before you go tearing into it, check the return solenoid on the header lift valve with the reel lift switch in the down position. I ran into this before IIRC to lower the header both solenoids on the header lift valve are energized, and to lower the reel the return solenoid on the header lift valve is energized. I could have something backwards here I am running purely on memory here. But trying to send you in the right direction.
 
You do know that some functions use more than one solenoid. It is in your operators manual which ones should have power for these functions. Sounds like the one for the return is not working right, it is a one way system for the reel lift, but needs to activate another for oil to return through the valve. Double check that first, and then go from there
 
This makes two of you with obvious experience saying basically the same thing.
So I just went all through my manual (1991 1660) and I find no such information.
One thing I liked very much that AC did was put complete and individual circuit wiring diagrams in their combine books.
 
The reel circuit uses 1 solenoid to lower the reel, but 2 to raise it.

One solenoid opens the reel passage, another closes the pump return flow passage through the valve stack.

When you lower the reel, the reel solenoid only opens , dumping fluid into the open return flow passage and gravity lowers the reel.

To raise the reel the reel solenoid opens and the return passage solenoid closes, trapping pump pressure in the return passage. Thus high pressure fluid is pushed into the reel passage which extends the cylinders. When you release the reel switch from the "up" position, the reel solenoid closes, locking the reel in position, and the return port opens allowing all pump pressure / flow to return to the hyd tank.
 
Bob, one tidbit that may help you at the salvage yard some day. The later Gleaners (N series and later , possibly some earlier gleaners) use the same electric over hydraulic stack valves as the 14 series Axial- Flow IH combines.
 
I remember the hyd solenoid troubleshoot diagrams, but I think they were in the shop manual ?
My shop manual is out on loan right now so I can't check it.
 
After doing a little more research, i replaced the oil pressure sensor, thinking it would not fix the problem since it seemed to be working. this did fix most of my issues but a different issue resulted. When using the auto header height control when going down it jerks down not smooth? Not for sure what to do next? The reel lift problem fixed.
