(quoted from post at 19:13:21 10/16/12) why do they call it a clamp? WE call them a bunker
silo.

CLAMP name is lost in the mists of time. Its a universal name in Britain for a heap of silage. I guess because the silage has to be sealed "tight" it would be "clamped" down to prevent the ingress of air.

My father told me , that as a boy in the 1920's His father always put turnips, potatoes, or mangels in a "clamp" From his discription, it was a pit dug in the field near the barn, and used to store winter feed for cattle. They dug the pit by plowing with a single furrow plough,2passes over the same spot. Then diging by hand down another2-3 feet. fill the trench with the root crop, cover with straw. Then cover the straw with the dirt you had dug out of the trench, leaving a vent gap at the ridge. Dad said he hated doing this core, and when he took over the farm after the WW2 , never grew hoe crops again. So the term Clamp , is not new to me, but we putour silage in pits or bunkers. Bruce

Nice to see the Manitou telescopic handler on the clamp. I run a small company servicing and repairing Mannitou handlers and fork lift trucks. MJ
