Straw spreader bats worn out. Angle iron??

Last year my Gleaner A put the straw in windrows so heavy I could not plow or disc. The spreader is missing one of the bats and the rest are worn down. What would be wrong with some 1" or 1 1/4" angle iron and possibly some paddles on them?? As it is it leaves such a windrow I have to burn, no other way of managing it. Any suggestions on what would work best?

Deere used old variable speed belt too. Works good and is safer than angle iron just in case you trip on a cornstalk and fall into it. I know, you aren't supposed to be in that area with the combine running but........ Jim

Thanks for the response guys. I should have thought of using a belt. I will look around and find a bigger V belt to use. I do see how the steel ones would be dangerous. I must get it working better because it is windrowing.

Yes, go with rubber. Years ago I replaced the wooden bats on a 460 Case with strips of rubber tire and they worked great. I cut out the ribs of some old triple rib front tractor tires and jst bolted them on in place of the wood.

I will see what I can come up with. I need to get it done before the last minute. I have some time to get it done.
