1968 Case 960

I've followed the YT boards on and off for years. Guess it's finally time for me to contribute something...

I bought this 960, 402 cornhead, and 13' platform winter of 2010-11. Finally got it moved to my shop early spring of '11 and started getting it ready for the Half Century of Progress show in Rantoul, IL.

It was a project since it had set for at least 20 years. The fuel take was half full of what could've been mistaken for asphalt, rear tires were shot, wiring was mouse eaten, the right bearing on the front walker crankshaft was GONE and the flange ate into the shaft.

Rebuilding the ignition system and carburetor were the biggest problems. I finally found a kit for the Carter BB E7D4 carb from a supplier in Missouri. New points, condenser, coil, external resistor, etc. New fuel pump, some plumbing, new starter, and the list goes on.

I ran around 100 bu of corn through it at the Half Century show, with only a broken 2050 chain on the cornhead. It was a pretty good show.

This past summer I ran another ~100 bu of wheat through it. I intended on doing more, but the right cylinder bearing was starting to get warm and I really wasn't too interested in burning it to the ground.

Enough rambling, here are a few pics:

that looks like a pretty nice machine. We run a 660 with 2 row 40" front probery hasnt been used for last 4 years since we have been silaging all our corn and a 600 with a 13' platform for barley oats and wheat. Keep your eyes out hopefully have some pics of an Aussie barley harvest to post in about month

Great pics and story. I just bought a case 1160 combile up in Wi. yesterday. The guy has a GREAT collection. I posted a bunch of pics on the case forum, it would be worth a look.

good looking machine, sure glad you took the time to repair it and show her great job thanks for sharing, I also have at least one 1968 960 be interesting to compare serials if you don't mind cnt

Looks great! Sounds like all the hard work has paid off in a good useable machine. What did you do to get the fuel tank cleaned up? I've got the same kind of a problem.

Cnt, looks like we are getting some competion from other guys liking Case combines! They always seem to hold their color real well and make for great pictures!!

I have one almost like it only mine is a special. I took the cab off of mine to cut fescue. You have to poke the seed out of the grain bin allot of the time and too hard to do with the cab. Good machine wish mine had less use. Best of luck with yours!

CNT, I don't remember the whole number off the top of my head, but I know it's before the big parts split at 835001.

I have some elevator problems that I have taken care of with duct tape so far. The door on the clean grain and the whole lower boot on the return are shot. I have a good machine shop close by that should be able to bend a new door.

Rear walker crank is pretty worn, as are all walker blocks. They aren't real loose yet, but I need to figure out what the plan of attack will be before next summer's show.

Believe it or not, I ordered shaker bushings and a clean grain elevator chain this week. Bushings were in the regional parts depot and a dealer in WI had the elevator chain.

I had a radiator shop boil the tank and line it with some kind of tank liner. My old radiator guy retired and it took some work to find someone willing to deal with my old tanks.

Great looking combine..Those old Case combines must have had great paint..You never see a bad looking one..

Wart, enjoyed the history and of course the pictures, looks like you really did well, and got her back to life too.Love those happy endings
