Who is raising rye?

We used to raise rye as a way to control wild oats; now I haven't seen a rye field in a long time since chemicals came along to control the wild oats.

Always liked to combine rye and work the ground afterwards. The rye roots would find the wild oat kernels in the soil and penetrate the kernel so they could not generate; that would give us 2 years of raising crops without wild oats.

We grow it for a cover crop. Always combine just enough to have seed for the next year. Its just a mulch crop to plant corn and soybeans into and realy holds the moisture in and weeds down until the crop can canopy.

Dad used to. He gave up on winter wheat, our winters were too tough for that, but the rye did well.

I've planted a couple acres now & then for cover, but the last 2 years, too dry for it to come up. Didn't try any this year, good thing.

we try to plant around 40 acres every year. Mainly for the straw. generally get real nice bright clean straw. alot for our own use when we had cows, but any extra is easy to sell. Not e real high value crop, but virtually no input costs. Plus I like that it greens up early in the spring and deer grazing on it seem to help it stool out rather than hurting it.

I grew some the last few years. I use it as cover crop and the seed has gotten expensive, so I combine and save some now. I clean it with a clipper cleaner that I fixed up. I sold a little extra to neighbors and I ended up getting a lot of phone calls from people looking for rye seed or wanting me to clean theirs.
