Used combine

Seems like every year I go through this. I'm starting to get impatient waiting for the custom guy to get here and get the beans off and usually the same when it's time to do corn.
So if you guys needed a combine for 100 acres what would you look for. It does not matter to me what color it is. Thanks

Try not to get too upset with your custom harvester when he cant be there exactly when you want him to be.Being a custom harvester myself,I know the stresses involved with trying to schedule enough acres to make a profit and dealing with weather and breakdowns that you cant help.We make our living off of the same acre you do and unless your guy is one of the few that has a "dont care"additude no custom harvester wants to leave you hanging for any reason.Back to your combine question,i would look for something with auto header height for beans with a grain table and a diesel. I.H.615,715 or 1420-40 series in fair shape are fairly easy to find but new parts for the 15 series will be hard to find.I have seen a lot of TR70-85 New Hollands real cheap and they would be overkill for 100 acres.4400-6600 Deeres are also still around and would fit the bill easily for 100 acres although i have heard that new J.D. parts are starting to become harder to get.Gleaner?I really think that if you buy a combine and maintain it like it is supposed to be for a year or two you will really want that custom guy back.

We run our own combine most of the time but sometimes it is easer to get custom cutter in to do it they have the semi and the bigger machine what would take us a week he can have it done in a day and you don't have to wait at the mill for hours on end sometimes or have to worry about break downs either it their machine they have to fix it Like Haley you will run it for year or two then want the custom cutter back a combine can be a big pain when it is broke down.

Like the others said if you have a good cutter let them do it having a combine can be a blessing and a pain in the backside too . When they breakdown and you have to wait for part it even worst then not having one at all. They are a lot of upkeep on on for something that is used a couple months a year.

You can find older, smaller, affordable machines- however- it may be hard to find one with a real flex head and auto header height. That's the only way to go for doing beans. Corn is a lot easier.
Here in the damp northeast, the important thing to look for is a machine that's not rusted out, and something you can keep under cover!

Ya, I know, got to learn to relax... We've had some beautiful weather here the last few days and it's hard to watch others making progress while I sit here.
Thanks guys.
