Combine better run good this year

Just got my 2166 back from the shop....$17,000 bill. Just bought it last summer and thought it was in better shape than it was. I think i'm getting dizzy!

I'd be interested in some detail. What did they do? I just finished my fourth small grain harvest with a 1660. I think I've finally got it where I want it. It has a specialty rotor, in good shape. This past winter I installed the Kile "rotor flights"- the finger grate over the stone trap- serrated bars on the stone trap beater- and the large drive sprocket on same.
It seems to feed evenly now, even when the straw is a little tough. I've plugged it twice, and don't ever want to again!
It gobbles corn like there's no limit!

Well I'll kinda hit the high points here. It has 3089 engine hrs 2040 seperator hrs. 1997 model. They replaced the feeder chain(witch I'm not sure needed it but why take a chance) new vanes, incline auger and tube, cone, elephant ears, put in extended wear rasp bars and the ears also, new rotor cage, lower rotor bearing, concave adjustment pot, other misc bearings, and nuts bolts and labor was $5700. I thought this was a better combine when I bought it. The thing has been through the program every year since it was new but I guess that don't mean they fixed everything it needed either. It should be good to go and if I keep programming it it shouldn't be that expensive each time. The killer is there were some screws they replaced at $5.04 each and there were 41 =$206.64.

The previous owner did a lot of work on mine. Feeder chain, rotor work, belts, tires, etc.
The only thing I replaced, before this past winter, was elephant ears. (Now I have a fairly new set to get rid of!)
I have welded on the cone. Since I don't grow beans, and put the "rotor flights" in, I hope the cone will not wear so fast.

I had a 1660 before this one and it was a good machine. This 2166 is basically the same machine with a few more bells and wistles.

Oh man! I would be getting that sick feeling. How many acres do you have to run through that machine? Must be quite a few?

Hope it works well for you.

At that 2000 seperator hour mark it's not surprising. I have been replaceing similar stuff on ours the last couple years myself and it has less sep hrs. The incline auger for the AFS from cih was $1000 alone. Parts prices are rediculous and have been for several years. Granted there are aftermarket parts but I have found many to be inferior in quality. The dealer shop rate is $100/hr. I try and do all my own repair work if possible. I need to start working on mine again, mostly replacing some chains, sprockets and bearings this go around.

No rocks from me but who knows. I inspected the old parts and it looked lkke wear. I got extended wear stuff in it now. I gripe about the prices but my dealer is top notch and doesn't replace stuff without consulting me.

Maybe similar at our case shop, they want to do everything
and maybe a little more. Sounds like you got a lot done
though. I have to put some more money in my 2188 this year
too. Funny thing is, not much to harvest though!! Anyone
ever come to the point where they have to change the turret
and top ring on the unload auger?? I think I'm there or close,
1900 sep. hours. Wondering how hard it is. I have had good
luck with shoup's, their ripper points lasted longer than factory
ones and planter parts are ok. Sorry to hijack your post.

I bought this on big iron auction and traded my 1660 in lexington,ne and they sent it to cornlea iron auction. I put a new clean grain in it after the season and never ran it.

i put that in my 1660 the 3rd year i had it. I went to swing the unload out and it about fell off. I tightend the truss rod and finished my field and sent it to the shop. I like to work on combines if i have time but there are some things I don't have equiptment to do......rotors...u loader, etc
