Foraging Barley for whole crop silage. Behind the chopping cylinder are two rollers which crimp/crack the grains to make them palletable.

This is taking the 1st cut around the field hence the forager towing the trailer behind.

We also direct chop barley. We like to cut ours in the soft dough stage when the plant is just starting to turn at around 65% moisture.Yours looks to be much dryer from the dust in the picture. We harvest ours with a John Deere 12 harvester with a 6ft. direct cut head.We have also used a Deere 38 harvester with a 8ft direct cut head.

The whole crop is normally harvested earlier when the grains are soft. But with a wet summer, some barley couldnt be combined for grain, so to save the crop it was chopped for silage. This particular field was over ripe and dusty.

They store silage in bunkers around here, some open and some with roofs.

The photograph won 1st prize in a national competition in a farm machinery magazine.

It was taken with 3 year old Panasonic Lumix TZ5 compact set on automatic. The light changed for a few moments, and I was very lucky to capture the whole scene.
