How 'bout a 3300 deere?

Hey all,

Now I wouldn't normally be looking at a combine this small, but one with a diesel engine and a 2 row head just come up for sale for $1250 20 miles from me. Combine demo derbys just started getting popular around here and I think I'd be saving it from that fate. I figured I could get it and then keep my eyes peeled for gas machines to line up in the woods for parts. My dad runs 300 acres of corn and soybeans and a few acres of oats for cover on the hay. Once my place is out of CRP, I'll have about 80 acres of corn, 60 acres of wheat, and 40 acres of beans. His is conventional, mine is Organic.

My dad has a 6620 sidehill for a "real" combine, but the 3300 would be my own. I'd use it for a backup and for smaller fields. And they're such a darn cute little machine! I pretty much am the guy who sets up and maintains dad's machine every year, so I know enough about combines to be dangerous.

Ideas and opinions welcome,

Bill

I had an early model gas flat screen 3300 combine with 13 ft grain head and 244 corn head. The gas engine really drank the fuel. If you had dusty soybeans you had to clean the top and front engine compartment screens on a daily basis so it wouldn't overheat. What made it worse if they got rain on them and dust was really wet. I orginally wanted a later model diesel but couldn't find one.

Didn't know they made diesel 3300's. Sounds like you got it figured out. Will be a little small for you some day, but seems you know what you got there.

Would be a high price here; but then never seen a diesel in that size machine, so maybe not out of line at all?

Farmerboy, that sounds like a pretty good deal. If you and your dad both have a combine, though, who is going to haul off the grain?..:) Mike

Twelve hundred dollars doesn't go very far in today's farming world, so if it doesn't have a ton of hours, it isn't a beater, and the engine runs decent then grab it quick. I've spent more than $1200 on misc. parts.

Absolutely. It would be a shame to let a unique machine go if it's in decent shape. A retired neighbor runs my fathers original late Gleaner E and it's perfect for him. This would be very similar in capacity, only newer.

Hey all,

Thanks for the responses. I went to look at it today and left it where I found it. The engine run real nice, but the rest was tough. He had said it needed some TLC on the phone, but he didn't say how much. First thing I noticed was a lot of dinged up tin and broken lights. Then I noticed worn tailing and clean grain elevator sprockets and loose chains. It got worse from there. The augers were worn sharp and the snapping rolls were past junk. The header electric clutch went bad and it was bolted to run when the separator was engaged. A quick drive told me second gear was out of it.

Too bad, I kinda had my heart set on the little gal. Maybe another one will come along.

Farmerboy,

I dont know where you hail from, but for not much more than that, I"d bet you could buy my old "77 6600 Hydro. There is a sale coming up in early november just north of Lawrenceville, IL at Groffs Auction where it will be on the chopping block.

A 6600 would beat the pants off of a 3300. Easier to find parts also. I just put a new injection pump, radiator, and many belts on within the lat 2 years. Has 6 cyl 404 cu in motor (same as 4020 tractor).

Someone ought to check it out.

I traded it to another jockey on a newer combine.

Hi Chuck,

Like I said in my original post - This'll be a toy. The 6600 is a very capable machine, but the 3300 is a cutie. If I were looking to take out 100 or more acres, the 6600 would be the way to go, but I'm just looking to putter with on 10 acres of oats and maybe take to the fair for the antique club.

If anyone knows of a nice 3300 for a good price in the southwestern Wisconsin area, keep me in mind.

Bill

Bill, I noticed a nice 3300 diesel advertised in the Iowa City, IA Craig's List yesterday. The price is more than the one you looked at but includes two heads (213 and 244). Hope this helps. Mike
