Friday while on a trip to NC Kansas I decided to visit Alta Vista,KS for two reasons. One was I had never seen it before and wanted to take some pictures of it.Two was the Mill Creek-Skyline Scenic Drive starts there and runs 17 miles northeast to Alma,KS.I wanted to drive it to visit the ghost town of Volland,KS.

Alta Vista is slightly off Hwy 4 and did I ever get a surprise when entering town from the south. Here was an Ag Museum with an entire row of old combines. It wasnt open so I just started taking pictures thru the chain link fence. The two rarest combines were a SP-9 Case and a canvas 21 Massey,

Besides the combines they have hay balers, corn pickers, plows, drills, tractors, and more.It would be an interesting place to visit. Its less than 200 miles from me and I had never heard of this place.

Did I mention that it was 106 degrees when I took these pictures.A few hours later we were in Manhattan,KS when a severe storm hit at 4:20 pm.70-93 mph winds blew down trees, power poles, tipped over semis, and more.It was a mess getting out of a city of 50,000 that had no power. They got 1.15" of rain in a short time.I thought for awhile that it was going to blow our SUV over.

Thank you Blaine for those great pictures. I thought that was a Case SP 9 or 12 and a Papec corn silage chopper in the background . I have ran an old SP 12, cutting soybeans. It was a nitemare to operate in more ways than one.
Did you get no. 1 into a building yet ? If we get up your way , I would like to stop and take a look at her again .
I am wondering if there is any other make or model of a Self Propeled combine, serial no. 1 left in the country or world ? That question mite be answered on here? Thanks again . clint.

It kind of reminds me of the Original Cross Tractor Salvage

My sister was caught in that storm coming home from work. She was very afraid.

Clint,#1 MM is halfway in a shed and the rest has a tarp over it.Stop by when you are up this way.The first 760 Massey is still around as I have a picture of it somewhere.I doubt that very many # 1 combines have survived.

It was one scary storm.Coming in from the east we watched
it develop as one lone storm just to the west of
Manhattan. When it hit Manhattan it exploded in to a line of
severe storms 100 miles long down to McPherson. My wife
had just gone in to a store on Poyntz Avenue.5 minutes later
the storm sirens were going off and all heck broke loose.

Jimmy,I think you are right. We used to do business there 40
years ago. That place kept our old 403 IH combine
running.Duane was very reasonable on parts.

Still have a 460 D Dad and I bought there in the 1970"s. Bought a lot of parts. The last I knew he owned Hilltop Salvage, he has to be getting up toward 80.

Thanks for the info. about the photo of the 760 no. 1. I think you mite have the only serial no. one combine in captivity.
Thanks for the invite to your place . Not sure when we will be that way , but will plan on stopping . clint

WOW!! I see an AC rotobaler and a Hesston Stakhand 10 along with many other old timers I remember very well. Thanks Blaine!
