I am thinking about buying a JD 55 EB. The combine is near perfect condition. It is from an estate. What does "EB" stand for? I have a few acres of corn to combine, and thought this would be better than switching heads. I am lazy. Does this combine have a good track record for what it is? Any honest opinions appreciated. Rob
 
The EB stands for edible bean I believe, I don't really know all that much about em. I ran one for awhile once back in high school. Just a plain 55 square back.
 
They are good machines with a good track record. Many parts wiil interchange with 95 and 105 parts. In many ways, the 55 was the best combine of its time and size category. The "EB" stands for "edible bean", which means that the combine was equipped with a number of perforated areas such as the grain pan, clean grain and return augers, and unloading auger in order to get rid of as much dirt as possible, but solid metal covers were provided for harvesting other crops. You won't go wrong with a 55, they were good and reliable machines.
 
Thanks guys, I will try to get some pics up this weekend when I go pick it up. It is in the best shape of any combine I have ever seen of this age. Not even a tear in the seat! Also, could a quick-tach feeder house still be had?? IMO, that is all it really needs. Rob
 
The EB's had spiked cylinders and concaves.
I have a '69 55EB with a 303 gas and hydro. It has a rasp bar cylinder and regular concave. I was told that late in production some EB's were left over and were converted to conventional cylinders and concaves, not sure this is true.
I installed a quick-tach feeder house last fall. You still might be able to find one in a salvage yard.
I'm running a 215 flex head for beans and a 343 3 row narrow corn head. Both were very big improvements over the old heads.
 
Rasp-bar cylinders and concaves were regular equipment on the EB combines and always were. The spike-tooth cylinder and concave was a $101.00 option.
