I have hooked up to one a few times and was told that it helps it from dancing and it also changes to direction of the tractor rotation to the rotation for the thresher.

It is for the rotation if you cross the belt it makes the rotation the same as tractors which is what most threshers need it does keep them from slapping also but is done primarly to get pulley rotation in the right direction

this originated to keep the wind from blowing the belt off,
threshers were first used on steamers remember, & they could be
run either direction so rotation was not originally an issue. they
can be run without the twist if need be but dont stay on that well
at all even with no wind. lineup must be much straighter too.
