5542 Oliver

I see the advertised Oliver 5542 on the photo ads. Rear shot looks good. It says it's a "Wheatland" Does that have special meaning or just a phrase they added? I'm searching for some older--but good machines for fescue. Looks like it has a saddle type grain tank. I know of one IHC thathad a saddle tank and when they got if full of fescue they had a time getting it out so they parked it. Are these Olivers same as any other brand? Someone said they might be same as Ford? LB

I bought a G-1000 Vista MM from Charlie so the 5542 Oliver combine will be like he says.Olivers,MM's,and Cockshutts of that era are all the same.

I have original Wheatland 5542 Oliver sales literature. It says that its the ideal machine for grain, bean, and grass seed fields.

LB, the 5542 is very similar to a 431 Oliver Combine. I own a 431 Oliver. The grain tank runs down the Left side of the machine. There is a drag auger on the bottom of the bin that takes the grain to the back of the tank and then out the unload auger. Very simple set up. The grain tank on my 431 fills evenly and unloads evenly. You can look over your left shoulder and see exactly how much grain is in the tank. My 431 is a very smooth running machine. I know Charlie, if I didn't have 3 combines setting outside right now I'd buy the 5542. That and I'm still holding out for a 5297 Minneapolis Moline and a HUGE machine shed to put everything in.

theres thousands of them in canada. i use a 1984 cockshutt 5542 to combine my oats and it works very well. we have combined clover with it once and had no problems

I ran a 542 for many years, was a good combine.

The 542 was an update of the 431, same size but a few things built a little heavier. The 542 was standard with a Chrysler flat head 6 with the chrysler 318 V8 as an option. I believe the 5542 was an upgrade of the same machine as the 431 and 542 with the 318 V8 as the standard engine. The 318 pulled well and ran cheaper than the 6 cyl models, so was a good upgrade.
The wheatland had mone of the options the corn/bean machines had.
