Harvesting TODAY - HELP: JD 6600 engine choking & dying

Posting this in the off chance one of you are familiar enough with diesel engines to give me a shove in the right direction.

I've borrowed a JD 6600 combine (four row) to harvest our 1+ acre of field corn, and after doing about half of it, the engine has started choking down and dying on me. Fuel was low, so I added 10 gallons (diesel), and ran okay driving back out to the field, but started choking down again as soon as I started running corn.

It's a 6 cylinder diesel, and I know little about it - no manual available.

I suspect maybe a choked fuel filter, but thought I'd post here to see if any one has any other suggestions. Owner is away today, otherwise I'd ask him.

Thanks,

Make sure tank vent is clear and clean and if vented cap it's okay. Should be a sediment bowl on bottom of tank make sure it's clean and the electric lift pump is always working. Yes, change the square fuel filter JD has them on the shelf as does any Stanadyne disel shop or parts store in another brand. Did you run it out fuel? May have to open plug on filter or even crack some lines on injectors to get all the air bled out. 6600s are bad about that if run out of fuel or sit too long.

Thanks, 78 - will go check that out. The fuel filter has a clear outer shell and looks a little "milky" inside - not much. Don't know what's considered 'normal.'

I drive a TDI Volkswagen, but really don't know much about diesels.. Also have a restored 1950 Ford 8N, so am familiar with sediment bowls.

Thanks again!

Just checked the fuel strainer, and it was pretty plugged up. Cleaned it out really good (including the screen), and finished the half row from when it was choking out, and it seems to be running fine now. Gotta do a teleconference for work for the next hour, and will hopefully go finish the field afterwards.

Many thanks!

Take sediment bowl loose, there is a screen in there that films over with gunk.Wash it off.Its happened to me over and over again on a 6600
