IH 1420 questions

My neighbor just bought one of these, and we were wondering how it sized up to my 1460. He has a 4 row wide corn head on it and that is all it ever had or did. He wanted to try my 6 row head but I think the cylinder is too small to handle it. What do you guys think? What size platform should he look for? He wants to do corn, beans, and barley.

Some say it will handle a 6 row, others claim it really can't. Certainly will need some rear ballast particularily if using an 863 or 864 corn head. The 1420 finals were weak and this machine has few parts common with the other axial flows. Would only have one because it was cute, not for real use. I would probably try and use a 15 ft head.

Not recomended to run a 6 row corn head, although it will but not well. Had a 1420 and ran a 15 foot platform and cut lots of beans with it. Around 250 acres a year, done a really good job. A 4 row wide or narrow corn head is right for it.

There is usually a chart stuck in the cab that shows the max header sizes for each combine and tire size. Beware of over loading the finals, or breaking the axle tube. Check posts on IH axle failures.

Sort of like my neighbor who raised the header, but noticed it did not raise. Too busy folding the axle and transmission up into the bottom side of the combine.
