Good news! scrap prices dropped like a brick.

I live close to the Ohio river, just outside of Pittsburgh, PA. (The former steel capitol of America) We usually get a really good scrap price, because the steel stays local, or goes on a barge right down the ohio river. We were getting $15.50 per 100 lb at the highest. That's $310 per ton. Within the past 3 weeks, the price has dropped like a rock, and is now just $5 per 100 lb., or $100 per ton.

If your local scrap yard is still paying well, hurry up and take advantage of it, because it's about to nose dive.

Why is this good news? Now, I can get combines for scrap price at a 1/3 of the cost that I was just a month ago!

:D

John - the even BETTER news is the meth/pot/crack heads may just find stealing farm equipment and parts to sell for scrap too much work for such little money now and find another way to finance their habits. Mike

Of course grain prices have tanked, too, and input costs from this spring aren"t going to be covered by this harvest . . . Lucky me, I have a newborn son, and bankruptcy waiting for me around the corner . . . .
